Black Lemonade with activated charcoal

I’ve been so fascinated with this dark and mysterious drink that I had to give it a go and see if it’s all that it’s made out to be.

Black Lemonade gets it’s colour from activated charcoal. Together with freshly squeezed lemon juice, water and sweetener, black lemonade is used as a part of a detox programme to rid toxins from the body, treat alcohol or food poisoning, and believed to remove bacteria responsible for tummy bugs.

SO WHAT IS ACTIVATED CHARCOAL?

Firstly, activated charcoal is not the same as the charcoal from your braai (barbecue)! Activated charcoal is manufactured by burning a source of carbon (commonly wood, bamboo or coconut shells) at extremely high temperatures, which leaves it porous. These pores capture, bind, and remove poisons/toxins from your body. Activated charcoal can be purchased in capsules or powder form.

BENEFITS OF ACTIVATED CHARCOAL

  • Digestive cleanse – Activated charcoal helps cleanse and detox the body by trapping toxins and flushing them out of your system. By removing the toxins from your system, you can reduce joint painincrease energy and increase mental function. It also helps alleviate bloating and intestinal gas, and even prevents hangovers! Emergency trauma centres across the world use activated charcoal as an effective treatment of poisoning  and drug overdose.
  • Whitens teeth by absorbing plaque – simply wet a toothbrush and dip into the charcoal powder and gently brush your teeth. Rinse well.
  • Body treatments – Effective at treating body odour and acne and relieving discomfort from insect bites and rashes.
  • Water filtration – you can purchase activated charcoal filters which naturally adsorbs and reduces toxins in your water, while removing E. Coli and enriching it with beneficial minerals.

With a recent attack of stomach flu in our family, I knew it was time to get out the activated charcoal and make black lemonade. It seemed to do the trick and I managed to keep the bug at bay!

With a great dose of vitamin C from the lemon juice and the incredible benefits of activated charcoal, I highly recommend this magical black drink. Activated charcoal will definitely have a permanent spot in my first aid kit!

Before taking activated charcoal, please read the NOTES below recipe.

PS: The activated charcoal is tasteless, so black lemonade just tastes like lemon water. You can substitute the lemon water with freshly squeezed juice if you prefer.

Ingredients

Juice of one lemon

1 teaspoon (about 3-4 capsules) activated charcoal

Maple syrup or stevia to taste (optional)

Filtered or spring water (you can also try sparkling water)

Ice

Method

Juice the lemon and add the lemon juice to a mason jar.

Add the charcoal powder to the lemon juice. If using capsules, gently squeeze and twist the capsule to open it and pour the powder into the jar.

Add the rest of the ingredients to the jar then whisk all the ingredients together.

Drink on an empty stomach.

Notes

It is recommended that black lemonade be consumed on an empty stomach at least 2 hours before or after a meal.

Activated charcoal is a powerful detoxifier and is not selective on what it flushes out. It can interfere with the absorption of nutrients, supplements and interfere with prescription medications. It’s generally deemed safe for most individuals, but best to consult your health practitioner before taking activated charcoal.

It is important to drink enough water when taking activated charcoal. Drink 12-16 glasses of water per day if you are taking activated charcoal, to help flush out the toxins and to rehydrate.
